We facilitate the Southern Cape IONS Community Group (SCIONS) as a voluntary independent association recognised by the Institute of Noetic Sciences. This was the first IONS Community Group established on the continent of Africa.
A ‘scion’ is a descendant or heir, or an offshoot or twig used when grafting plants. The word originates from the Old French sion, cion meaning “descendant; shoot, twig; offspring” and that is exactly how we see SCIONS‘ relationship with IONS.
Since 2024, we have merged SCIONS with the Kwendalo Institute’s “Kwendalo Conversations” and, true to Kwendalo’s isiXhosa meaning “of nature”, we facilitate dialogues that illuminate multiple perspectives of ‘knowing’ the nature world. Some of these are noetic in quality, others may be more from voices and perspectives that are less heard, or even marginalised. It is about sharing insights and experiences that ultimately serve to deepen connectedness with nature, self and each other. It recognises that conventional science, traditional knowledge and direct (‘noetic’ / ’inner’) knowing (based on experiences) are valid ways of understanding the universe and what it means to be fully human.
Kwendalo Conversations invites participation of perspectives at its Harmony Centre every month. Other workshops and gatherings may happen sporadically throughout the year.
