Creating meaningful experiences

We utilise direct nature experience to unlock deeper insight into one’s sense of relationship with life and purpose in the world.

In this spirit, we have co-initiated Masiyembo a collaboration between professional guides, facilitators and researchers who are bonded by a commitment to the wellbeing of life on earth and motivated by a desire to share their enthusiasm and wisdom with others.

We currently offer meaningful outdoor experiences in partnership with:

The vision of Masiyembo is to:

  • Create opportunities for people from diverse cultural backgrounds to find meaning and experience well-being through nature for the benefit of humanity and the environment
  • Support a dynamic peer-driven standard and shared ethos for facilitated nature experiences that allows people to remember reawaken, remember and rediscover their relationship with life.
  • Enable joint advocacy with unified messaging around our collective need to “remember our nature to secure our future”.

Masiyembo is an isiXhosa word that generally translates simply as “[let’s go] back to our roots”. Yet, as some elders have shared with us,  it has a deeper meaning – an invitation to remember our origins and a call to join us:

“Come… let’s go there, let’s go back to that special place and revive our shared ancestral memories of what ‘human~nature’ really means… and how we might bring that into awareness today.”

In practice, Masiyembo integrates various approaches from various practitioners, with backgrounds and expertise in wilderness guiding, biomimicry, conservation psychology, nature therapy, arts-based facilitation, life coaching and social work.  This cumulative wisdom is used to cultivate meaningful experiences and (re)connection to place.
